There are many duties which could easily occupy one of an officer’s hands making it impossible for them to manipulate their pistol:


Horse Patrol

  • Restraining a witness / victim while engaging threat(s)
  • Support hand is holding flashlight, tool or to control threat / weapon 
  • Motorcycle, Bicycle or Horse Patrol
  • Dog Handler (support hand holding K9)
  • Crowd control – support hand holding riot shield
  • Active Shooter Search – support hand holding ballistic shield
  • Active Shooter Response – support hand holding shield or victims
  • Protecting a member of the public while addressing a threat
  • And More...

Additionally, during the performance of related duties, there are many ways an officer might find one of their hands temporarily unusable:

Injury to shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, fingers etc caused by:

  • Ground fighting or grappling injury
  • Shot or stabbed
  • Crushing injury
  • Vehicular collision
  • Fall (stairs, ice, fence, foot chase etc.)
  • Dog, human (or other) bite

Recreational & Competitive Shooters

  • Temporary or permanent injury
  • Amputations
  • Limiting physical condition in: wrist, elbow, shoulder
  • Wheelchair participants
